Manufacturing Processes
The metal treatment services we offer include:-
- Shot Peening: a mechanical finishing process that induces a surface layer of residual compressive stress via a direct stream of shot at a metal component with high velocity under controlled conditions. The resulting compressive stresses resist initiation of fatigue cracks and subsequent growth into substrate material.
- Austemper / Austempering: a process whereby a ferrous component is quenched (most commonly into molten salt) from an austenitising temperature and then held at an elevated temperature to transform to a bainite structure reducing distortion giving enhanced toughness at high hardnesses.
- Gas Carburising: a case hardening process in which carbon (introduced by carbon rich gas atmosphere) is dissolved at the surface of a steel component to produce upon quenching a hardened surface layer to a required depth.
- Carbonitriding: a case hardening process in which carbon and nitrogen (introduced by carbon rich gas and ammonia to furnace atmosphere) is absorbed at the surface of a steel component to produce upon quenching a hardened surface layer to a required depth.
- Through Hardening: a hardening process that is achieved by austenising and quenching with a carbon neutral atmosphere (i.e. no carbon enrichment). This will provide a tensile strength (throughout the part) upon quenching which is tempered primarily to increase the ductility and toughness.
- Annealing: a Non-Hardening process that consists of heating a component to a suitable temperature and once fully heated slow cooled without quenching. This process is primarily used to soften metals.
- Stress Relieving: a Non-Hardening process that consists of heating a component to a suitable temperature (below austenising temperature) and once fully heated slow cooled without quenching similar to annealing. This process is primarily used to remove residual stress in manufactured components.
